At the beginning, it was a weekly excuse to talk openly and honestly about what had happened that week: technology news, bigger industry shifts, the state of the world, and whatever felt like it might matter later.\n\nIt was always deliberately small-scale and conversational. The point was not to sound like experts with perfect takes; it was to create a public record of what seemed plausible at the time, with enough humour and honesty to come back later and see what aged well.\n\n## What it became\n\nKeeping it weekly eventually became unsustainable, but the best part of the format survived. Small Time Bets is now an annual predictions show: we look back at the year that just happened, review what we got right and wrong, and make a fresh set of predictions for the year ahead.\n\nThat annual rhythm gives the show a useful constraint.
